Language, a means of communication between people
In the context of globalization, in a world where borders tend to disappear, communication is a notion of base, it is a binder between the different individualities and language is an abstract, complex communication system (verbal or in writing) between people.
Translation, a basic element of the cultural development. A short history
The importance of translations was proved, from the Antiquity, by historical documents. The first translated documents date from the year 3,000 BC, from the old Egiptian Kingdom. In Europe, the first certified translator was Livius Andronicus, a greek slave, who, in 240 BC, translated “The Odyssey” in Latin. The climax of the development of ancient civilizations coincides with a period of time when translations were highly honoured. Through translations, the Greeks became familiar with Oriental texts. In turn, the Romans took many of the Greek cultural elements. The golden epoch of Latin literature was an epoch of translations; it is from this time that the first norms of traductology date. Cicero, in his “De Oratore”, declared himself in favour of free translations, as he believed in the potential of his own language and in the creative talent of translators.
Quintilian, in “De Institutio Oratoria”, is the first one who foresaw a sort of dichotomy, a “conflict” between the translated and the original text.
In the IX-th century, king Arthur the Great was the first important translator of Latin works into English. Religious translations were also important in the process of development of languages and literatures. The “Bible of Luther” (1552) and the “Bible of king James” (1611) are significant examples for Germany and England.
